Westminster terror: An attack on democracy

Published on:

This refers to the editorial, “The london reminder” (March 24). The strike on Westminster Bridge was an attack on democracy in its cradle. It is but a symptom of an enormous tragedy, recalling london’s 7/7 bombings more than a decade ago. May be london does have the resilience to recover soon enough, as it did after the carnage in the underground. But this terrorist attack has sent the UK reeling. It is a mistake for any country to handle terrorists with kid gloves even if they do not threaten its interests directly.

One reason why the UK is in this predicament is that it has allowed various terrorist groups to establish an underground network to facilitate gun-running, narco-trade, and other such criminal activity. In the aftermath of the terror strike at Westminster, the British Government vowed to combat terrorism with might and main, though it usually urges developing nations to sort out issues that give rise to terrorism through negotiations with terrorists.
