Welcome gesture

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “looking beyond politics” (October 25). It rightly states that, like his predecessors, Prime Minister Narendra Modi could have celebrated Diwali either in Delhi or in his home State, or in Varanasi. Instead, he chose the valley to be among the people affected by the floods.

It is a good sign that the National Conference and the  People’s Democratic Party welcomed the visit. On the other hand, as is its wont, the Congress termed it as a poll gimmick only to appease the voters.

This gesture has been hailed even by the BJP’s bête noire, the Aam Aadmi Party, whose senior leaders have welcomed the Prime Minister’s gesture to be with the jawans on Diwali. Our soldiers are hundreds of miles away from their near and dear ones, and they safeguard our boundaries so that we may sleep comfortably.

It seems that the rudderless Congress has not learnt anything from its consistent defeats and is under the illusion that sooner or later it will find its lost glory through such statements.
