This refers to the editorial, “Uttar Pradesh’s Yogi” (March 20). The election of Adityanath Yogi as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh has surprised many in view of his image of a firebrand Hindutva votary. However, in clearing Yogi’s name, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah must have taken into account everything and must have been confident that he was the best to carry forward party’s agenda of sabka saath sabka vikas.
Reactions from the ‘secular’ media and also from commentators on the selection of Yogi as the Chief Minister were not surprising. As expected, they recalled what Yogi had said and done in the past. As a matter of fact, he is the most popular leader of eastern Uttar Pradesh. Problems of people of all communities, including that of Muslims, are solved in the janata durbar held daily by Yogi in Gorakhpur. It is time to have a little patience and watch how he unfolds in his new role.
