This refers to the editorial, “The gravity of discovery” (February 15). The amazing scientific discovery of gravitational waves in the universe is being hailed as one of the biggest breakthroughs in the history of scientific research. The spotting of the waves as they entered the earth was possible after two massive binary black holes, approximately 30 times the mass of sun, collided to provide an exciting scientific spectacle. Put in simple words, the discovery of gravitational waves adds immensely to the existing knowledge of the universe. It allows scientists to ‘hear’ sounds of the universe and observe universe in a unique way. Astronomical happenings can now be studied in different wave lengths of light that was not possible till date.
It is believed that more information on the neutron star is on the horizon through the gravitational waves. It is a matter of pride that a few Indian scientists were involved in this discovery. One hopes that India's dream of building its own laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory materialises soon.
