Water woes

This refers to the editorial, “Water crisis can worsen” (April 8). It is heartening that the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court have known their displeasure over the hosting of Indian Premier league matches, which require large amounts of water, when Maharashtra is suffering from an acute water shortage.

There can be no justification to use water for the maintenance of pitches at stadiums when there is no water in the taps. It should not be hard to decide what should take precedence  survival or entertainment. The nub of the matter is that IPl matches fatten the Board of Control for Cricket in India and its mandarins.

This explains why they avert their gaze from the grim reality of drought. The Government must see to it that the people are extended adequate financial help to meet their basic needs.
