Sir— This refers to the article, “Deal with water crises  before it is too late” (October 24) by Arif Ahmad. The writer has significantly drawn attention towards India facing severe water crises where 54 per cent of the country has turned into water stressed dust bowl with many rivers rapidly dry up. First, urbanisation has reduced and vitiated human dependence on river system. Second, diversion, dumping, storages clearing of vegetation, habitat caused complication. Thirdly, climate change is another villan of the piece effecting water cycles. Fourthly, Himalyan rivers like Ganga, Brahmaputra and Sindhva, drastically affected due to expansions, are spree of power houses constructions using these waters and constructions of dams. Hence, the issue of environment sustainability and flow of the rivers needs efficient coordination.
