Watch out! Your bias is showing, Mr Sen

This refers to the editorial, “Going beyond economics” (July 25). Nobel laureate Amartya Sen seems to be going the Justice Markandey Katju way by speaking on unrelated subjects. The Bharatiya Janata Party has correctly seen Mr Sen as an apologist for the Congress in the light of some of the recent political statements by the well-known economist. Even his ‘economic outlook' is politicised. Mr Sen has supported the Congress-led UPA Government's food security scheme, the brainchild of Ms Sonia Gandhi, which is seen by impartial observers and prominent economists as a purely vote-garnering device that spells disaster for the country's fiscal health.

In fact, secularism and communalism are issues for the politicians, intelligentsia, and the media; not for the masses which, in the 2014 general election, are likely to cast their vote for a Government which can provide good governance. Random utterances by political leaders and Mr Sen's opinion may delight Modi-bashers, grab headlines and become ‘breaking news', but is of no value to the voters, the sole decision-makers.
