Voters' victory

Published on:

Sir — The high percentage of votes polled in the States that went to elections recently is good news for democracy. A high turnout no longer reflects an anti-incumbency mood of the electorate. Earlier, people came out in large numbers to give a thumbs-up for the incumbent Governments in Gujarat and Punjab, whereas Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh saw a change in regime after a heavy turnout. The Election Commission deserves credit because, over the years, it has been instrumental in simplifying the process of voting. The commission has updated electoral rolls, and it is now being perceived as a people-friendly institution.

Of course, without self-motivation on the part of the people, it would not have been possible to have such an impressive turnout. The fact that one-fifth of India’s population is voting for the first time, shows the unbridled enthusiasm and eagerness to participate among the youngsters.

Also, let us not forget the role of the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi. Mr Arvind Kejriwal’s party has evoked curiosity among the public on how a movement-turned-political party, with its lofty agenda of bringing essentials virtually to people’s doorsteps, will perform. In a way, the AAP has tried to dispel the ‘VIP culture’ people see among major political parties. Many might not have voted for it, but the party has, without doubt, stoked people’s feelings towards being an integral part and parcel of a vibrant electoral process. This is a good omen.
