Voters betrayed

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Denied the right to vote” (April 28). The Election Commission has, over the years, transformed itself from its partisan and lackadaisical image, thanks to a few able men who graced the post of Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners. This high constitutional authority has earned plaudits from citizens of the country who have increasingly looked upon this body with hope and confidence.

Even in the ongoing election, the poll panel has done a commendable job to ensure a by and large peaceful and transparent election. However, when lakhs of people find their names missing from the voting lists, in Maharashtra, for instance, then the credibility of the exalted institution is bound to come under a cloud. Election Commissioner HS Brahma has chosen to apologise in quick time, but it will not clear the air easily; after all, voters were denied their right to vote.

Though it appears premature to bring in a conspiracy theory, the possibility cannot be totally ruled out, since the connivance of local level officials with vested interests can happen. Meanwhile, the voters must ensure that their names are on the electoral rolls before the polling day.
