Virtual terror

Published on:

Sir — This refers to the arrest of the Bangalore-based engineer, Mehdi Masroor Biswas, for running a Twitter handle in support of the terror group, Islamic State, as also the latest report, “ISIS supporter threatens cop” (December 15).

It is disturbing that, once again, it should be a foreign medium, Channel-4, to first break the news of an Indian Muslim engineer’s involvement in operating a social media forum, propagating the cause of the ruthless jihadi outfit, the ISIS. It seems that Mehdi’s Twitter handle had been active for three to four years, but our intelligence agencies were either unaware of it or did nothing even if they had some information on it.

Undoubtedly, it is a most alarming development. Earlier, some of our commentators were saying that, generally, Indian Muslims were unaffected by jihadi activities and preaching by Islamists. Of late, several facts have come to light about a few young Muslims getting indoctrinated through the social media, in favour of the IS and the solidarity with its self-proclaimed Caliph as the new redeemer of the Islamic faith. Is it just the tip of the iceberg for IndiaIJ
