Vijay Mallya must return and face consequences

Published on:

This refers to the editorial, “Stormy days for Mallya” (May 5). The Rajya Sabha ethics panel’s recommendation to expel industrialist Vijay Mallya from the upper House with immediate effect could not have come a day too soon. Mallya's second term, anyway, would have ended in July, but Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari’s order to reject the liquor baron's first ‘resignation’ before accepting the second, was a snub to the latter's efforts to cool things down. Mallya, who is dodging authorities in India by his protracted UK sojourn, should know that he is a victim of his own acts of omission and commission.

Mallya's obstinate attitude to evade the law even after the cancellation of his passport, and arrest warrant being issued against him, has left his admirers and friends in politics and industry disappointed. Come what may, the law of the land will catch-up with him sooner than later. The best option for Mallya is to return to India, boldly face the law, and allow the law to take its own course.
