Value old ways

Sir — This refers to the article, “Reinventing education” (January 14) by Promod Pathak. With increasing population and depleting layers of opportunity, competition among people to grab a livelihood and spend a decent life is increasing. In the present scenario, in the industrial sector, companies are given the liberty to retrench their work force in the name of unprofitable market situation.

Companies, in order to en-cash the privileged situation, are driving out employees who are in general, 40 years and above. This way, they are relieved off good sum of liabilities which otherwise they would have to pay. However, the effect of this method has far reaching consequences. In general, the liability of a 40-plus family person is maximum in our society. Such bolt from the blue can shatter the value system of the family. After liberalisation and the introduction of market economy, prominent foreign companies are playing hard to destroy the Indian value system. Unless the menace of the above mentioned factors is tackled, education alone cannot retrieve the value system.
