Using wrong means to taint political rivals

This refers to the editorial, “No evidenceIJ Fabricate it” (October 17). The acquittal of all the accused, including former Telecom Secretary Shyamal Ghosh, in the excess spectrum allocation case, is a major embarrassment for the Congress. The Special Court's observation that the charge-sheet had been filed for “extraneous reasons” with “redacted and garbled facts” vindicates the NDA regime’s stand that the Opposition had conspired to defame it.

The decision comes as yet another shot in the arm for the Government, after the Supreme Court dismissed the last set of appeals for yet another investigation into the ‘Kargil coffin scam', recently. The ‘coffingate' was an important weapon in the Congress's arsenal during the 2004 lok Sabha election, which it gleefully used to cause damage to the BJP's prospects, especially since the latter had traditionally taken pride in its nationalist credentials. It is time political parties stopped indulging in shoot-and-scoot practices, smearing one another with taint, and making bureaucrats the scapegoat.
