Urban planning

Sir — This refers to the report, “Delhi’s world 2nd most populous city” (July 12). It is reported that Delhi’s population is 2.5 crore. The figure will reach 3.60 crore by 2030. This raises a number of issues. The Government should prepare for the future needs of housing, electricity, potable water, sanitation, transport, broader and better roads to accommodate more traffic etc.

The National Capital Region should be developed in a planned way and have a larger network of Metro trains connecting Meerut, Alwar and other surrounding areas in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Rajasthan.

Advance planning is needed to avoid congestions by 2030. We should not be caught napping. Green technology must also be introduced. Urban development planners and the Government of India must work together to meet the coming challenges. If they fail to do so, we will struggle to cope with the demands that will be upon us soon.
