Sir — This refers to the report, “After Cong, AAP pitches for ballot paper” (March 18). A huge chunk of our political outfits still seek for conventional ballot paper electoral systems, as EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines) are subject to tampering due its vulnerable nature. A number of Western countries have already reverted to the ballot paper procedure as these electronic devices are apparently not tamper proof and election results can be manipulated, as claimed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
like political parties, many voters too have apprehensions about the credibility of such convoluted machines. AAP’s allegation that the Election Commission of India is not ready to allow EVMs to be verified for impartiality is utterly significant and cannot be downplayed. In a democracy, people’s trust and satisfaction are the twin significant ingredients. Therefore, the election watchdog should introspect and hold serious debates and revert to the paper ballot mechanism.
