Sir — This refers to the editorial, “More proof upon proof” (March 22). The CBI has earned notoriety as the ‘Congress Bureau of Investigation’ and the ‘Convenient Bureau of Intimidation’. It’s because, whichever combine came to power, the premier investigating agency was used as a handmaiden to harass and file false cases against inconvenient politicians and political parties.
The surprise is that the likes of Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati and Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, facing corruption cases, still brazenly extend support to UPA2. Compare them to AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa, who too had faced similar corruption charges but stood her ground with gumption and never turned submissive to the ruling establishment.
Instead of making a hue and cry about the ‘functioning’ of the CBI, the Opposition should force the Centre to make the investigating agency an independent, autonomous body which is answerable only to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
