This refers to the report, “Telangana ignites Statehood fires” (August 1). Over the years, the ruling Congress has mastered the art of solving one problem by creating another, more serious problem, be it in the normal realm of administration or for political survival. Every decision, major or minor, in the recent years, has been taken to extract maximum political mileage, help the party and prop the inefficient, scam-tainted UPA Government at the Centre.
With the spectre of 2014 poll looming and public sentiment ranging against the Congress-led regime, ‘Telangana' is a handy tool to divert attention from the Government's deficiencies. It seems that the decision to create a new, 29th State, was rushed into without addressing the various contentious issues that only a States Re-organisation Commission is qualified to do. It would be interesting to see how the UPA tackles similar ‘statehood' demands from across the country. The electorate, meanwhile, fed up with the UPA's populist schemes, will judge purely on the basis of governance. And the portents are ominous for the Congress-led UPA.
