This refers to the report, “UP Government suspends Home Secy over letter controversy” (October 14). Why should the Uttar Pradesh Government officials, who had sensibly issued a communiqué to discuss the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya, be punishedIJ Officers have been suspended or transferred over the issue.
British records compiled by the Faizabad district gazetteer had declared that the Babri structure stood on the debris of a Ram temple which had been demolished by Mughal ruler Babur in 1528. The Archeological Survey of India too had conclusively established that a Ram temple existed at the site. This irrefutable evidence should have clinched the issue.
Since a ‘three-way verdict' of the Allahabad High Court has not ended the imbroglio, the political class should request the Supreme Court to pronounce a clear-cut judgement without further delay. The cause of the Ram temple at the site in Ayodhya is justified, and it would be nice if the political parties and religious organisations understand and respect the sentiments of the majority community in this regard.
