Unshackling the CBI from bureaucracy

This refers to the editorial, “No shield for corrupt” (May 8). Section 6A of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act violated the constitutional provision of equality before law.

It is a fact that the Government withheld indefinitely or even denied permission to the CBI to probe corrupt civil servants who enjoyed favour with the political leadership for various reasons. However, there are apprehensions that with a free hand the Central Bureau of Investigation may go rogue and misuse its powers to harrass honest civil servants.

The CBI has a dubious record of manipulation by the Union Government which controls it and appoints a person of its choice as the CBI Director. It is necessary that the appointment of the CBI chief is done by a collegium so that a person of impeccable integrity is appointed, who will not dance to the tune of the Government.
