Unnecessary brouhaha over Wendy Doniger's book

Published on:

Penguin Books India, in its wisdom, has decided to voluntarily withdraw Wendy Doniger's tome, The Hindus: An Alternative History. Therefore, the question of curtailment of freedom of expression doesn't arise at all. But pseudo-liberals are attacking Hindu organisations for the publisher's decision.

Some Hindus felt that the book contained information that presented distorted and obnoxious interpretations of Hinduism and Hindu deities. Therefore, they sought legal recourse. They did not resort to any extra-constitutional methods or illegal actions, as some groups did after a Danish newspaper published a series of cartoons featuring Prophet Mohammed.

liberals should realise that they don't have a monopoly over the freedom of expression. Many so-called liberal media outlets don't even publish articles and letters expressing contrarian views on most subjects.
