Unjustified criticism

Sir — This refers to the article, “The curious case of Rahul Gandhi” (February 27) by Kalyani Shankar. The Congress vice president and Member of Parliament Rahul Gandhi’s sabbatical is being hyped out of proportion, followed by a slew of contradicting speculations being jumped upon by some political pundits.

On the face of it, there is no method behind Mr Gandhi going on a sabbatical after his party’s recent electoral debacles. But, the leave of absence gives him time to reflect upon his and his party’s limitations and find out-of-the-box solutions to address them.

There might be a divergence in views between various members of the Congress and Mr Gandhi. The resounding loss the old grand party has met with is rankling with both the old guard and the young group alike.

Mr Gandhi enjoys the public image of being an upright person who not only admits to his mistakes but also has the courage to contest his party’s decisions boldly, when he feels the need.
