Unjust protests

Published on:

Sir — This refers to the report, “Pakistan on the brink” (September 1). Democracy in Pakistan seems to be in peril once again and the country may be heading towards military rule. The protests by Mr Imran Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf and Pakistani-Canadian cleric Tahir ul-Qadri’s Pakistan Awami Tehreek are illogical and unjustified.

More than a year after the general election, they are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, alleging electoral fraud. It is not understood what stopped them from raising the issue during and immediately after the election.

Mr Sharif was not in power when the election was held; he secured a massive mandate from the people who toppled the ruling Pakistan People’s Party. Mr Khan should respect that.
