Unfair model

Sir — BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi has incurred the wrath of the Election Commission over an alleged poll code violation since he displayed his party symbol immediately after he cast his vote.

People are looking forward to a Modi administration if the NDA crosses the half-way mark. What was the hurry for Mr Modi to brim with satisfaction even before the election results are outIJ His adversaries are desperately trying hard to get him disqualified on one ground or the other to ensure that he does not become Prime Minister. He should be careful.

But it is an erroneous belief that the display of symbols influences the voters. On an earlier occasion, the Election Commission had ordered that statues of elephant in Uttar Pradesh be covered since the elephant happens to be the symbol of the Bahujan Samaj Party. But what about the Congress’s ‘hand’ symbolIJ Can the hands of people be wrapped with a clothIJ  Necessary amendments should be made under Section 126 (1) (a) and (1) (b) to scale down the punishment in case of proven guilt.
