Unending debate

Sir — This refers to the editorial “Nothing inhuman here” (May 24). Major Nitin leetul Gogoi took an unconventional decision to dissuade the stone-pelting youths and it was indeed perilous, but could those who are criticising him for this action suggest a better alternativeIJ

A dangerous situation sometimes needs an equally precarious action. The person who is trapped amidst a rioting mob alone knows the perils of being stone-pelted. The Army more often than not, faces inhuman situations where there are no clear guidelines, no rules or no precedents to follow.

Therefore, it should be respect ed and not debated. Do Army jawans not have a right to liveIJ Mother Teresa had rightly put it: “Human rights are not a privilege conferred by the Government. They are every human being’s entitlement by virtue of his humanity.”
