Uncommon cartoonist

Published on:

Sir — In free India, legendary cartoonist RK laxman will always remain an icon who amused and educated the common people for more than five decades. He brilliantly represented political personalities and bureaucrats alike. Conspiracy, corruption, and opportunism also acquired space in his cartoons.

When politicians are criticised in cartoons, they see in them as ‘mis-reporting’ and an ‘exaggeration’. RK laxman responded that since the Government didn’t amuse the public, the task would have to be done by the cartoonist. His aim was to strengthen democracy and the freedom of expression. His ‘common man’ may have been a silent spectator to ongoing in the cartoon, but he has always had the last laugh.
