Uncertain future

Sir — This refers to the article, “Exit Muslim veto, enter the Muslim voter” (March 22) by Sandhya Jain. My first impression about the results of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election was the expression of suppressed Hindus, liberating themselves from the oppression of the Indian secularists — both politicians and scribes. Hope, this tempo will be sustained.
The writer is right to contend that without substantial Muslim support, the BJP could not have won so many seats. There has also been a reference to the Ataturk revolution in Turkey in the 1920s. But his (Ataturk’s) secularism is being killed incrementally by the present dispensation led by President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was lucky to survive a coup engineered by a section of the Army — the custodian of secularism. One wonders if Turkey will remain secular in the 2020s, after a century Ataturk imposed on his people from above.
