Unbelievable audacity

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “British tripe” (August 2). The UK Court seeking details of the facilities available at Mumbai jail where Vijay Mallya will be ‘lodged’ if the extradition materialises, seems to suggest that the extradition will be conditional only if the jail conditions are satisfactory for the fugitive to be handed over to the Indian  authorities.

One gets the impression that the extradition is not based on merits of the case but on the conditions of the jail.   Notwithstanding his claims and his readiness to repay the amount due to the banks before the law, Mallya is an accused and should be treated as such.

Mallya may have been accustomed to flamboyant lifestyle but that does not mean that he can seek such facilities in a prison. If every accused were to seek such facilities, will the Government provide the sameij If that were so, many would find it convenient to spend time in jails.

The idea of sending the criminals to jails is to make them realise their mistakes and reform themselves and not to lead a luxurious life. More than anything else, why should a foreign court bother about the jail conditions rather than the crimeij
