Tyagi's arrest damages Armed Forces' image

Published on:

This refers to the editorial, “AgustaWestland probe” (December 13). It is unfortunate that for the first time in the history of India, a servicing or a retired Armed Forces’ chief has been found guilty of corruption. However, there is no smoke without fire. So, whether former chief of the Indian Air Force, Air Marshal SP Tyagi, was solely responsible for tweaking the norms in favour of AgustaWestland or not, only time will tell. Hopefully, the Central Bureau of Investigation will get to the root of this case and help nab the guilty in a time-bound manner.

The Congress is obviously worried because there cannot be any corruption without the involvement of bureaucrats and politicians at the highest level. Air Marshal Tyagi’s name had cropped up way back in 2013. Hence, the arrest cannot be political vendetta. Having said that, the former officer’s arrest has made a huge dent on the otherwise clean image of the Armed Forces. This will demotivate aspiring young candidates.
