What happened in the lok Sabha on Tuesday during the passage of the Bill to create the State of Telangana is not only unprecedented but also a slur on our democracy. What we witnessed was a rampant violation of human rights, virtual absence of the rule of law, and failure of the law and order machinery.
However, the blacking out of the lok Sabha proceedings has surpassed everything. It has shown that a Government in power can do whatever it likes in Parliament with the complicity of some opposition parties.
It is deplorable that the people across the country could not watch the proceedings with regard to the important issue of the division of a State. I hope some sense will prevail so that such undemocratic acts are not repeated. An independent inquiry should be ordered to find whether the switch-off of the telecast was deliberate or a real technical problem, as the authorities have been claiming.
