This refers to the article, “Imagine a fatwa against Rafi” (April 8) by Rajesh Singh. No Indian will chant rhetorical slogans so as to pass the litmus test of patriotism, as defined by the nationalist brigade. Rather, one’s all-embracing mindset, respect towards diversities and democratic ideals, will speak about his/her dedication towards the country.
Rabindranath Tagore asserted, “I will not buy glass for the price of diamonds, and I will never allow patriotism to triumph over humanity as long as I live.” Remember, he is the person composed a number of swadeshi songs, including ‘Jana Gana Mana…’, reflecting his deep love for the country. Tagore’s love for the nation was not limited to mere raising of flags or zealous chant like ‘Bharat Mata ki jai’; he respected values and humanity. He had an earnest yearning for an environment where the mind is without fear and the head is held high.
