Transparency a chimera

Sir — This refers to the article, “Golden chance for our system to come clean” (June 25) by A Surya Prakash.

All the major political parties should keep one thing in mind: That they are surviving  because of their supporters. We elect the candidates and send them to Parliament and the Assemblies. The Central Information Commission wants to bring the parties under the Right to Information Act, but the parties are opposing because they don’t want to reveal the details of funds which they receive from different sources. They would have to be transparent and  accountable, something which the parties dread, given the long list of unfulfilled promises made during election time.

Also, most political parties avail tax exemptions on their funds. Are they utilising this money for the welfare of the peopleIJ The answer is a big ‘no’. Given this resistance to the CIC order, chances for the system being cleansed of all corruption, and an era of transparency and accountability being ushered in, remains a distant dream.
