Transgender confusion

Published on:

Sir — The Union Government has rightly told the court that it is ready to empower the ‘third gender’ but not gays, lesbians and bisexuals. The court must clearly define ‘transgenders’.

While it is true that the concept of lGB is based on the sexual orientation of a person, the term ‘transgender’ has to do with a person’s own sense of gender identity. Surely the court has to clarify who a transgender is. Years ago, I had seen the viscera photos of eunuchs in a medical textbook which had left me with sad feelings.

The Government is also procedurally correct in arguing that the National Commission for Backward Classes cannot be bypassed when it comes to granting Other Backward Class status to transgenders.
