Touchy Indian politicos

Sir — This refers to the news report, “‘Upset’ UP CM gets New York Consulate reception cancelled” (April 28).

Uttar Pradesh Urban Development Minister Mohammad Azam Khan has unnecessarily made an issue out of his brief detention at the logan International Airport in Boston. The US security personnel were just doing their duty. It is only in India that Ministers consider themselves as ‘VIPs’ and above the law. Describing the episode as an ‘insult’ to the people of India, is laughable.
By boycotting the Harvard University programme, for which he had specifically gone to the US, and by getting the reception by the Indian Consulate in New York cancelled, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav too has not behaved like a statesman. A strong protest lodged with the Indian Consulate would have been enough. The incident has only shown how touchy and averse to rule-compliance we Indians are. When we visit other countries, we have to respect and abide by rules, regulations and the law of that country.
