Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Sounds good on paper” (April 30). Yes, it sounds very good, in fact it’s too good to be true, that there is a feeling of ‘bhaichara’ for India sweeping the political parties in Pakistan.
The editorial is on the mark when it states that, at a time when the election process in Pakistan is underway, it is politically correct for all parties in that country to proclaim friendship with India.
Unfortunately, the reality is quite the opposite. Beyond this so-called bonhomie the two are neighbours, whose relations are often marked by acrimony, suspicion, belligerence and frequent provocations. If further proof of this belligerence is needed then we have the recent case of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who was brutally beaten by his prison inmates in lahore.
Isn’t it a travesty that, while the Pakistanis in Indian jails are well-protected, Sarabjit Singh in Pakistan’s Kot lakhpat jail suffered untold ordealIJ We show compassion while Pakistan responds with insensitive conduct.
