To feed or not to feed those stray dogs

Published on:

This refers to the article “Feeding stray dogs is right thing to do” (June 30) by Hiranmay Karlekar and the letter, “Stray dogs may also threaten human lives” (July 1) by Azhar Ali Khan. If humans cannot take care of non-humans, who willIJ I urge letter-writer Azhar A Khan to think what is logical: A higher consciousness taking care of those with lower consciousness or, as he states, “All nature... been created with a view to facilitate human lives...”

I’d also like author Hiranmay Karlekar to consider that dogs are extremely territorial. Feeding a stray dog means it not only considers the person who feeds it as its master but also a good part of territory around its master's house as its own territory. This may become a menace for a person crossing the area. In such cases, a dog can be as bad as an attacking wild animal. If this problem can be handled, any programme may be implemented to pamper man's best friend.
