Time to walk the tough talk against Pakistan

Published on:

This refers to the editorial, “Patience running out” (August 26). The Government of India talks tough when Pakistan violates the ceasefire along the line of Control, but does not actually enforce its hard stand. For example, bilateral trade is sometimes cancelled and bus trips are discontinued in response to Pakistani provocations, but eventually they are all restored.

Mere cancellation of Foreign Secretary level talks and opposition to the Pakistani High Commissioner's discussions with separatists (which should not have been allowed by the administration in the first place) cannot be a healing balm. These do not form a solution to ceasefire violations in which many innocent lives are lost.

The time has come when Indian diplomats, think-tanks and some military leaders come together to ponder over the problem of ceasefire violations. They must devise a line of action that will end unprovoked firing.
