Time for India to stand up to US arrogance

This refers to the editorial, “Hypocrisy unlimited” (December 20). America is no doubt a great and vibrant democracy. But it is also known for double-standards and hypocrisy.

It thinks it comprises superior human beings and that the others are inferior. What is baffling is that the US, which accorded diplomatic immunity to CIA operative Raymond Davis and paid blood-money to get him out of Pakistan, should treat an Indian diplomat as a criminal — strip-searching and cavity-searching her.

Had it happened to an Iranian female diplomat, Tehran would have reacted violently and its elite guards would have stormed the American Embassy and held US citizens hostage. The Americans have taken such leniency with India because New Delhi is not known to react assertively. There have been several instances in the past where well-known Indians have been humiliated at US airports and elsewhere by American authorities, but the Government of India did precious little by way of protest.
