This refers to the article, “World smirks at us, we cry over celebrities” (March 27) by Rajesh Singh. The writer has rightly expressed the Indian media's obsession with celebrities and any news related to them, especially if they happen to be from Bollywood. There are many serious issues that are staring at us in the face, which the media must highlight. For example, the rising number of poor in our country. India is home to 50 per cent of the poor living in Asia, but our so-called national channels concentrate only on the metropolitan cities, film stars and cricketers. Very few seem interested in reportage from the rural parts of the country, where the real India lives.
Sanjay Dutt has been found guilty and convicted; the Supreme Court has announced its verdict and he must serve the five-year imprisonment. Why then is there such a hullabaloo over clemencyIJ Just because he is a celebrity, he shouldn't be treated any differently. The law must take its course.
