Theatrics in parliament

Published on:

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Superman v child-man” (July 23). Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s hug may have set an example of spontaneity, genuine respect for elder political adversaries by their younger counterparts but alas his ‘gesture’ fell short of setting the benchmark and became a victim of its anti-climax when the Congress scion walked back to his seat after all the hugging and hand-shaking, looking at his colleagues and sharing that smut ‘see-I-hoodwinked-him’ wink.

It looked as though Rahul Gandhi had come well-rehearsed for theatrics, but unprepared for the debate. The Congress president’s speech did have some punch but lacked substance.

Everybody knew that the floor test was merely a formality. It was a wastage of time, and crores of rupees of the taxpayers. What is the use of these abortive bids when the ruling party and the  Opposition have to hug each other in the endIJ It looked like a friendly match.
