Sir — This refers to the article, “Courts cannot erase what death cannot” (July 20) by Ashok Malik. The reason why caste remains a big issue in this country is because it suits the political ends of the ruling dispensation and the political class, which actively promotes these distinctions by handing out sops and endorsing ‘reservation’.
Doing away with caste distinctions and religious groupings is a must for proper governance and to ensure equity. The only distinction that should be there is between the haves and the have-nots, and nothing else. The Allahabad High Court has done the right thing by banning caste-based political meetings in Uttar Pradesh. The Supreme Court should endorse this ruling if somebody contests it before the Bench.
