The old guard must pave way for next generation

This refers to the article, “It’s time to rock the cradle with new faces” (May 6) by Kalyani Shankar. The writer’s analysis of the current political scenario in the country is on the mark. There are some political leaders who have been running their parties for ages, thereby showing a lackadaisical approach in divesting themselves of the responsibility of their respective party leadership. Those in line to take up the reins of the leadership include Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader MK Stalin and Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Congress scion Rahul Gandhi’s case assumes significance, given his political stature, even as speculations about his taking over as the grand old party’s chief have been in the air for long, more so because it is the Congress-led UPA alone which is expected to give the ruling NDA a tough fight in the 2019 election. However, the old guard in every party has always stood in the way of this change-over since it refuses to disturb the status quo.
