The grand old party is in terminal decline

This refers to the reports, “We need unity like Quit India days: PM” (August 10) and “Forces of darkness trying to destroy democracy: Sonia” (August 10). Even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement, was talking like a statesman, giving a clarion call for reviving the spirit of unity of the freedom movement days so as to take the country to great heights, Congress president Sonia Gandhi was talking just like just any other politician, whose sole aim is to criticise the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Government of the day. It would have been better if such cheap politics were left for some other day and not brought to light on a day associated with Mahatma Gandhi.

Meanwhile, one fails to understand for how long will the Congress keep on glorifying the participation of their ancestors in the freedom movement without making any effort to take the lead as an effective Opposition, to play a key role by criticising the policies of the ruling Government in Parliament. The grand old party must also remember that at the time of the freedom movement, the Congress was an umbrella organisation, encompassing almost everyone of the country. Today, the Congress has lost sheen.
