This refers to the article, “Politics and more in Rohith’s sad suicide” (January 26) by Sandhya Jain. It is a pity that the columnist has repeated the familiar arguments made by the supporters of Rohith Vemula. How can one overlook some unpleasant facts that have been revealed by the mediaIJ It was reported that initially, Rohith joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, then he shifted to the communist student body, Students' Federation of India and then to the Ambedkar Students Association. He was a Dalit activist. It has also been said that Rohith not only hated Hinduism, but was allergic to the saffron colour. Clearly, his academic brilliance was wasted due to his partisan politics.
Even as we celebrated the 67th Republic Day, we still remain deeply caste-ridden. A mere mention to review the reservation policy evoked violent reactions. Strangely, the advocates of reservations regard it as their democratic right to say so, but are opposed to people like lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan or the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief, who asked for a review!
