Terrible setback

Sir — The acquittal of personnel of the Uttar Pradesh Provincial Armed Constabulary, accused of killing innocent people in the infamous Hashimpura massacre case, is shocking. It is a classic case of miscarriage of justice. People turn to the courts to seek redressal of their grievances and punishment to perpetrators of wrongdoing. But if the courts fail to deliver justice, the offenders will only be further emboldened.

Delayed justice itself accounts for denial of justice, but when it is both delayed and denied — as it has happened in the Hashimpura case — can a victim’s hope be restored in the power and efficacy of lawIJ This is a big question. It is to be hoped that higher courts will intervene and review the decision, and ensure that the supremacy of law is held high.
