Tennis bodies responsible for lackadaisical attitude

This refers to the editorial, “Warning bells sounded” (January 20). Cricket and football are two popular sport disciplines where bookies and match-fixers have had a field day. It is now worrying that the shadow of match-fixing has loomed large over the lovely game of tennis. People spoke in hushed tones about match-fixing in tennis after ace tennis player Novak Djokovic claimed that he was offered an astronomical sum to throw a match in 2007. Recent revelations by the BBC and BuzzFeed News that top players are guilty of losing matches on bribe offers should propel the tennis world to take notice.

Players of unimpeachable integrity are bound to be viewed with suspicion whenever they walk on to the court. The anti-corruption Tennis Integrity Unit is accused of having looked the other way when similar incidents were reported in the past. Both the TIU and the Association of Tennis Professionals should be held responsible for their lackadaisical attitude of not acting on complaints.
