Teaching liberalism

Published on:

Sir — This refers to the article, “love for the old, regard for new” (January 13) by Anirban Ganguly. Swami Vivekananda was indeed a proud Hindu as well as an Indian, and this did not deter him from pointing out the vices that had plagued religion and the nation.

Also, neither did he try to impose his religious belief upon other communities nor did he project Hinduism and India as superior to others; rather, his love for religion and country got translated into love and respect for all religions and humanity as a whole. The rabid orthodox pseudo-nationalist organisations, who have emerged as the self-declared ‘guardians’ of Hindus, should learn a bit about liberalism from the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda.
