Sir — The United States likes to take credit for establishing democracy by ousting the rulers but it also has to take responsibility for the bad effects of its disastrous efforts. The US invaded Iraq because Saddam Hussein supposedly had weapons of mass destruction, but it was proved that he didn’t. The invasion resulted in the destruction of Iraq and its division into three parts for Kurds, Shias and Sunnis. Ironically, the US’s ally Saudi Arabia is fuelling the jihadi group ISIS. The ultimate game plan is to have a buffer zone between Iran and Saudi Arabia, and leave the rest of Iraq to its own fate.
