Sir — We thought that the newly elected members of the lok Sabha have come with a promise to give clean governance. But it is really shocking to learn from the Association of Democratic Reforms that 34 per cent of the new MPs in the 16th lok Sabha face criminal charges. Going by the success rate of elected MPs in this House, criminality or the charges of criminality must have favoured them.
Interestingly, 82 per cent of our new MPs also have assets worth over one crore rupee each, as compared to 58 per cent in 2009. This affirms the fact that money wields power in the same way a gun does. With one-third of MPs having both, they are going to be lawmakers in a country which longs for good governance. This is not a happy situation.
