After the most unfortunate and reprehensible incident of killing of a youth from Arunachal Pradesh in Delhi, everyone is promising justice and strictest action. But does our past track record support hopeIJ We find that for a while, everyone makes a noise and the incident remains in the limelight for a few days, and then it is forgotten.
We find that the investigation by the police is sloppy and slow, charge-sheet takes ages to be filed, witnesses turn hostile, perpetrators of crimes get out on bail and terrorise the victims and their families. In many cases, politicians ensure that cases are made weak or they even lobby for dropping the charges, which is too evident in Uttar Pradesh.
Despite increasing incidents of heinous crimes by juveniles, our system is unable to address the issue. Here the policemen get punished for the theft of buffaloes belonging to a Minister while ordinary citizens get no justice. What recourse is left but anarchyIJ
