Sweet Urdu

Sir — This refers to the article, “language of culture, not terror” (February 5) by Navin Suri. The author has dealt fairly with the subject. Urdu enjoys a huge appeal among the masses in India, and that is why it has achieved a lingua franca status in the country. The writer was spot on in saying that linking this sweet language with Islam happened after Partition, as Pakistan made Urdu its national language.

Indian films have relied on Urdu, not only for dialogues but in songs also. To bracket this language of peace with a particular community or a particular violent action of a section of the community is to do injustice to Urdu. let us rise above parochialism and celebrate Indian culture, of which Urdu is an inseparable part
